How to Track ChatGPT and AI Assistant Traffic in GA4 (2026 Guide)

By Jimmy PalOctober 24, 2026View as Markdown

Step-by-step guide to tracking ChatGPT and other AI assistant traffic in GA4: where it shows up, the AI Assistant channel, a regex report, custom channel groups, and why some visits go missing.

To track ChatGPT traffic in GA4, open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, switch the dimension to "Session source / medium" and look for chatgpt.com. GA4 also has a default "AI Assistant" channel for visits that arrive from recognized AI referrers. Any visit that arrives without a referrer lands in Direct, so treat every AI traffic number as a floor, not a total.

This guide shows where AI assistant traffic appears in GA4, how to build a report you can trust, why some visits go missing, and how to judge whether the traffic is worth chasing. It is written for B2B marketers who already have GA4 installed and want a clean answer in under an hour.

Key takeaways

  • OpenAI says ChatGPT search automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends out, so ChatGPT clicks can be filtered by source.
  • GA4's default channel group includes an AI Assistant channel for sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok. It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which Google counts as Organic Search.
  • Default channel groups cannot be edited, but you can build a custom channel group or an Exploration to split AI platforms out.
  • Clicks are only part of AI visibility. Pew Research found users clicked a link inside a Google AI summary in just 1% of visits, so most AI exposure never shows up as a session.
  • Judge AI traffic on engagement and pipeline, not session counts. The volumes are small for most B2B sites.

Where does ChatGPT traffic show up in GA4?

ChatGPT visits usually appear with the source chatgpt.com. OpenAI says ChatGPT search automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs. Google's default channel group also has an AI Assistant channel, which collects sessions from recognized assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok.

Two details matter. First, OpenAI ties this tagging to ChatGPT search, and its publisher FAQ says sites must allow OAI-SearchBot to be included in search answers. If you block that crawler, expect to see less of this traffic. Our guide to llms.txt and AI crawler rules in robots.txt covers the access side.

Second, Google documents the AI Assistant channel by medium. The medium is set to "ai-assistant" and the campaign to "(ai-assistant)" when the referrer matches Google's list of AI assistants. That means the label depends on the referrer your visitor's browser or app passes along.

How do you see AI assistant traffic in the standard GA4 reports?

Use the Traffic acquisition report. Set the primary dimension to Session default channel group to see the AI Assistant row, then switch to Session source / medium to see which assistants send the visits. Add Landing page as a secondary dimension to learn which pages AI platforms actually send people to.

  1. Go to Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition.
  2. Look for "AI Assistant" under Session default channel group. If it is missing, you may have no recognized AI visits in the date range.
  3. Change the dimension to Session source / medium and search for "chatgpt", "perplexity", "claude", "gemini" and "copilot".
  4. Add Landing page as a secondary dimension and sort by sessions.
  5. Compare the key events column against your site average to see whether these visitors convert.

Run the report for at least 90 days. AI referral volume is lumpy, and a single month can mislead you.

How do you build an AI traffic report with a regex filter?

Build a free-form Exploration with Session source / medium as the row dimension and a regex filter on the same field. A pattern that lists the main assistants catches both tagged and untagged referrals. Pair it with engagement and key event metrics so you can compare AI visitors against organic search visitors.

In Explore, create a Free form exploration. Add Session source / medium as a row, then add sessions, engaged sessions, engagement rate and key events as values. Add a filter on Session source / medium that matches regex. This is a starting pattern, not an official list:

chatgpt|openai|perplexity|claude|gemini|copilot|deepseek|grok

Test the pattern against your own source list before you trust it. Some strings can match unrelated referrers, and new assistants appear often. Review the list every quarter.

Why is some AI traffic missing or mislabeled in GA4?

Three things cause most of the gaps. Some apps and browsers strip the referrer, so the visit falls into Direct. Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks as Organic Search. And many AI answers never produce a click at all, because the reader gets what they need inside the answer.

  • Referrer loss. Direct is defined as source "(direct)" with a medium of "(not set)" or "(none)". Visits that arrive without referrer data end up there.
  • Organic Search overlap. Google says Organic Search includes AI Overviews and AI Mode, so that traffic cannot be separated in GA4 alone.
  • Unassigned. Google uses Unassigned when no channel rule matches the event data. If you see sessions with an AI-looking source in Unassigned, inspect their medium. A source tagged without a medium is one possible cause.
  • Zero-click answers. In Pew Research's March 2025 browsing data, users who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional result link in 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary appeared. They clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits.

The practical conclusion: GA4 shows you the visits that survived the journey. For the rest, pair it with a visibility tracker. We compare the options in our review of AI visibility tracking tools, and the zero-click context is in our zero-click search statistics roundup.

Should you create a custom channel group for AI traffic?

Yes, if you want ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude reported as their own rows. Google does not let you edit the default channel group, but you can create a custom channel group with your own rules. Put the AI rule above Referral so these visits are not absorbed into the generic referral bucket.

In Admin, open Data display, then Channel groups, and create a new group. Add a channel called "AI Assistants" with a condition on Session source that matches your regex. Then add one channel per platform if you want a split view. Keep Direct, Organic Search and Paid channels in the group so your totals still reconcile.

Keep the two views separate in your head. The default channel group is Google's definition and will change as Google updates it. Your custom group is yours, which makes it the better choice for board reporting and trend lines. Our marketing analytics service sets up this kind of reporting for B2B teams.

How do you tell whether AI traffic is worth the effort?

Compare AI visitors with organic search visitors on engagement rate, key events per session and, if you can connect your CRM, pipeline created. Do not judge the channel on session volume. For most B2B sites, AI referrals are a small share of traffic and a larger share of buyer research.

For scale, one client result listed on GTM 8020's own site reports 170 LLM sessions per month after three months of work, alongside 10,000 organic impressions per day. Small absolute numbers like that are normal, which is why engagement and pipeline matter more than sessions. For wider benchmarks, see our ChatGPT search statistics and AI search statistics roundups.

If the numbers look promising, the next step is improving what AI engines can cite. That is the work behind our SEO and GEO service, and the marketing analytics and attribution statistics give context on why attribution gaps like this are common.

Frequently asked questions

Does GA4 have an AI traffic channel?

Yes. Google's default channel group includes an AI Assistant channel for visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok. It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which Google counts under Organic Search. You cannot edit the default group, but you can create a custom one.

What UTM does ChatGPT add to links?

OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs for its search results. That lets analytics tools such as GA4 attribute the visit. It applies to clicks from ChatGPT search, so it will not capture mentions that never produced a click.

Why does my ChatGPT traffic show up as Direct?

Direct is the bucket for visits with no source information. Some apps, browsers and copy-and-paste behavior remove the referrer, so the session arrives with nothing to classify. GA4 then reports it as Direct. This is why AI referral counts in GA4 are best read as a minimum.

Can I track Google AI Overviews traffic separately in GA4?

Not in GA4 alone. Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks as Organic Search. Search Console reports them within the Performance report under the Web search type, combined with other search traffic, so you cannot isolate them cleanly in either tool today.

How much AI traffic should a B2B site expect?

There is no reliable benchmark, and volumes vary widely by category and content. Expect a small share of total sessions. Track the trend over 90 days, and compare engagement and key events per session against organic search rather than comparing raw volume.
